I can’t remember not wanting to be a writer. By junior high in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, I began filling spiral notebooks with stories inspired by popular sci-fi and horror movies before moving on to more realistic fiction in high school. As an undergrad at UW-Madison, majoring in German, I began to keep a diary, still maintained many thousands of pages and more than a half century later.

Outside of my college course work, I began to analyze the techniques of every author I read and following a tour of duty in the Army Security Agency applied these self-taught lessons in the creation of three academic apprenticeship novels.

Eventually, I earned a Master’s degree in Library Science and became a professional librarian at Ohio University in Athens, where I still live. In my spare hours while serving the worthy cause of education, I wrote eighty-one more short stories, nine novels, six screenplays, and submitted queries to editors and agents. In 1994, my persistence finally paid off when my first short story appeared in print, to be followed by thirty-seven others.

No kids, but many a beloved cat. And a diehard Packers and Badgers fan. I also love reading, walking, biking, foreign languages, genealogy, photography, films, history, and, above all, my Sharon.

Dying to save his life, the best man Tom ever knew swam out to sea and went under not once but twice. Without a buddy to keep your head above water, you sink like a rock. Eyes open or shut, Tom still can see Peter and his fateful lover, Katja, as they looked fifteen years ago. How improbable, how tragic, that the two should ever meet, much less, fall in love. They never would have, if in 1968 Tom and Peter hadn’t dodged the draft and thus combat in the Vietnam War by enlisting in the U.S. Army to become linguists. Learn More

Why can’t an aging mother quit combing a river’s banks? What triggers a respected businessman’s nightmares about hiding a corpse? Why does a boy risk swimming in treacherous currents despite his father’s warnings? Why can’t a family patriarch keep himself away from a breakfast nook at a holiday gathering? These and other stories in MANY WATERS feature characters on lonely quests to find whatever it might take to slake their parched spirits. Learn More
